The Russian drone attack on the shelter of the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the one that the whole world helped to build to avoid the spread of radiation, did not cause much excitement among the international community.
Significantly, the targeted Russian strike on a nuclear facility with a hit did not cause deep concern in the world, nor did it cause loud protests and condemnations of Moscow’s actions. The world press reacted rather restrainedly, and only a few top global media outlets placed the news of Russian nuclear terrorism on the front pages. Some world media reported it as a small line in the list of other “important” events of the day.
For example, CNN wrote about Russian nuclear terrorism, but placed the news not at the top, with the headline “Ukraine reports strike on Chernobyl nuclear power plant.”
The BBC did the same thing – without much sensationalism, as if something important had happened, but not so global.
The Economist, an influential global publication, reported exclusively on the negotiations and Zelenskyy’s position in its World News section. The Russian strike on the Ukrainian nuclear power plant was mentioned in a small line in the top 5 events of the day, and the main topic of the issue was an article dedicated to Friedrich Merz.
In The Washington Post, the Russian nuclear blackmail and attempted genocide of Ukrainians are not among the main events on the front page. Instead, there is a story about a possum eating a chocolate cake.
CNBS, a popular US publication, did not mention the Russian attempt to irradiate Ukrainians and half of Europe with radiation.
The Chinese international media outlets CGTN and Global Times did not mention that their Russian partner had started bombing nuclear reactors in Europe. But there is a lot of information about partnership projects with Erefia.
The Times of India, borrowing Sirko’s eyes, did not report anything in the evening news feed about the fact that the country from which they buy stolen Siberian oil, bypassing international sanctions, today tried to provoke a nuclear disaster and repeat the Chernobyl tragedy.
The Jerusalem Post – reported on the strike on the Chernobyl plant, though a little further in the international news, after “more important events” than the potential nuclear genocide of one of the world’s most fertile countries.
The point is not that there was no radiation leak and the situation is under control. The point is that this topic should have caused global outrage and mass protests around the world. A Russian attack on a nuclear power plant is a global event and a blatant act of threat to the whole of Europe. Because the Russian drone could have provoked a radiation leak and caused enormous radiation damage, the effect of which could have been equal to an atomic strike.
After all, if the cowardly tyrant in the Kremlin finally goes off the rails and uses the tactical nuclear weapons that have been scaring Ukraine and the world for three years now, what will be the reaction of Western partners and guarantors of the Budapest Memorandum if the attack on the Chernobyl nuclear power plant has not aroused much interest?
