“Ukrainians defeated the North Koreans” – such headlines would have been full of Ukrainian social media if Ukrainians paid more attention to their own achievements and successes, rather than fomenting treason by succumbing to enemy IEDs.

A number of the most reputable Western publications on the planet, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Sky News, wrote that North Korean troops had withdrawn from the front line in the Kursk region after suffering heavy losses in battles with the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

On January 19, North Korean soldiers practically no longer appeared on the battlefield. The North Korean military had not been seen at the front for about two weeks. Obviously, if everything was in order and the North Koreans were those fanatical warriors who have been training all their lives and dreamed of giving their lives for Kim Jong-un since childhood, they would not have been withdrawn without achieving military objectives in Kursk.

Disorganization and lack of cohesion, huge losses of 4,000 people – 30% of the contingent – led to the North Koreans being withdrawn for retraining and replenishment. This level of North Korean losses was confirmed by both President Zelenskyy and British intelligence.

The Institute for the Study of War wrote that North Korea could lose its entire contingent of approximately 12,000 troops stationed in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation as early as mid-April 2025.

Eyewitnesses to the battles with the North Koreans reported that from the moment they arrived on the battlefield, DPRK troops advanced with a small number of armored vehicles and rarely stopped to regroup or retreat. They did not pick up their wounded, but continued the offensive despite the losses. The North Koreans even came up with the idea of shooting down drones “live”: one unfortunate North Korean kamikaze had to run in front of an attacking Ukrainian drone and draw its attack on himself, while others fired small arms at the drone from ambush. But all the totalitarian practices of the enemy, based on disregard for the lives of their soldiers, did not help to drive the Ukrainian Armed Forces out of Kursk.

While Ukrainians on their sofas complained about the TCC, talked about corruption in the army and the country, and that “volunteers are over,” one fact remains: The Ukrainian Armed Forces forced the North Koreans to retreat.

And this is our great victory, which we should be proud of. Despite the fact that it is believed that the decision to withdraw North Korean soldiers from the front line may not be final and temporary, and the DPRK military may return after additional training or the deployment of a new military contingent in Russia by mid-March. Although Newsweek reports that DPRK residents are afraid to send their men to Russia and pay huge amounts of bribes. North Koreans are buying fake medical certificates to avoid being caught up in Russia’s war against Ukraine. As you can see, we are not the only ones with problems.

The Ukrainian army has managed to strike the first serious blow against the army of a totalitarian, thoroughly militarized and fanatically zealous country that many armies in the world are afraid to meet on the battlefield. But for some reason, the Ukrainian segment of social media is not teeming with thousands of memes about our success, because Ukrainians prefer fakes and posts about betrayal.
