Transforming Reality: How Augmented and Virtual Reality are Helping to Rebuild Ukraine

9 Min Read

Augmented and virtual reality play an important role in Ukraine’s recovery process. Especially in the context of modern technology and digitalization, these technologies are becoming powerful information tools to draw the international community’s attention to the war in Ukraine. But most importantly, these technologies are already improving the rehabilitation of military and civilians who have lost limbs and sustained other injuries as a result of hostilities. You can find out how below.

We offer you a selection of FIVE already implemented Ukrainian AR/VR projects that definitely bring our Victory closer!

  1. Under Sirens

A social project that united the Ukrainian fashion industry to remind us of the war in the center of Europe started by Russia. The project’s main goal is to continue talking about the full-scale war in Ukraine in a very unusual and creative way, which is faster to communicate and better understood.

The tags of fashionable Ukrainian brands feature soundtracks that come to life in augmented reality and turn into an air raid alarm. This is done precisely so that people in Monaco, Barcelona, or Milan can hear and feel what Ukrainians feel every day. To make Europe and the whole world aware of the realities in which Ukrainian designers have to work.

The visual image of the campaign is the soundtrack, which is present on all clothing tags of Ukrainian brands. With the help of AR, it is transformed into the sound of an air raid alarm that Ukrainians are forced to hear every day. The company’s goal is to show the conditions in which Ukrainian clothing is created and how Ukrainian designers continue their creative journey heroically.

The project has already been supported by more than 20 well-known fashion brands, including KSENIASCHNAIDER, Nadya Dzyak, POUSTOVIT, RITO, OMELIA, the COAT, etc.

The project was developed by ADVIN Ukraine in cooperation with BBDO.

  1. A mural of memory on the street. Zhylianska. Kyiv.

On December 13, 2022, the band Tvorchi unveiled a virtual mural in Kyiv on the wall of a house on Zhylianska Street, which was smashed by Russian missiles. The project is dedicated to the 145th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych.

In peacetime, murals are created on the walls of entire buildings. And during the war, they created a virtual mural on the wall of a broken house as a sign that cultural heritage should become the foundation of self-identification for every Ukrainian that cannot be broken.

The virtual mural features an illustration of the composer himself with symbolic elements: cranes and a broken heart, created by Ukrainian artist Olha Rodzik.

The AR image is accompanied by the track TVORCHI Broken Heart, in which the artists used a sample of the folk song “The Cranes Have Came” arranged by Mykola Leontovych. Leontovych’s “Shchedryk” is known all over the world, but the composer has more than 150 other works in his repertoire. They inspired the artists to create the track Broken Heart and implement the project.

The project was developed by Tvorchi together with ADVIN Ukraine.

  1. Calendar “FEROCIOUS YEAR”

The social project was developed specifically for the anniversary of the outbreak of full-scale war.

This project is dedicated to the tragic and victorious events of 2022.

This is a war calendar in augmented reality.

FEBRUARY is not a calendar about the passage of days, but about memory.

It is about the war that destroyed the understanding of space, time, and the meaning of life for more than 40 million Ukrainians, and later for the whole world. The war that turned the month of February into a year.

It reflects the days of burning pain and victory that gave us hope and the opportunity to keep going. AR technology was applied to such victorious events.

The Remembrance Calendar is intended to help us realize not only the fury of this time, but also our strength. After all, each of these days was a day of our strength. A force that, as it turned out, has no limits. The strength that we still need so much until one morning in this endlessly fierce year we wake up on Victory Day.

In digital format, LYTIY RIK can be freely downloaded from the network and donated at any time.

The project was developed by Advert agency together with ADVIN Ukraine and the Dnipro-1 battalion.

  1. Virtual tour of Kyiv region

There is no technology that can bring us back to pre-war times with all our loved ones alive and well and our homes untouched by the terrorist country.

But there are definitely technologies that will tell and show our tragedy to the world even better.

ADVIN organized a 360-degree shooting in one of the most painful places for every Ukrainian – Borodyanka and Irpin.

These are the technologies that will bring Irpin, Bucha, Borodyanka and other destroyed parts of our country right into the offices of international ambassadors, politicians and businessmen.

Many people just look at the photos and videos on TV screens and do not believe their eyes, because the picture does not convey the depth of the bleeding wound.

But now they will feel, see, and immerse themselves.

A 5-year-old girl takes them on a realistic virtual reality tour of her destroyed house, a neighborhood devastated by rockets and shells, a kindergarten and a playground across from a 9-story building with a bomb hole in 8 of those 9 floors.

In a warm office in Chicago, New York, or Paris, but also for two minutes in Borodyanka. For three minutes in Bucha…

All this in VR glasses.

This will be another small but effective step to accelerate the right decisions in support of our country and our soonest victory!

  1. Rehabilitation VR simulators

VR simulators have been developed to provide rehabilitation for civilians and soldiers who have lost limbs and have problems with the musculoskeletal system.

These are VR simulators that allow the patient to visually immerse himself in a certain 3D world, in which he physically tries to balance and develop his damaged limbs.

The loss of an arm or leg is one of the most common problems today. Faced with this, people experience phantom pains. Patients with lower limb paraplegia cannot feel their legs or arms again, but often experience phantom pain. The sensation of pain is real, and, as noted, it cannot be relieved by medication, but it can be relieved by immersive augmented or virtual reality technologies.

VR simulators will significantly reduce phantom pain caused by a lost limb due to the gameplay

In addition, there will be simulators for psychological recovery. They will work in such a way that the patient will be visually immersed in a certain 3D world created by the company, in which he or she will be able to interact with 3D objects, listen to the right sound, visually feel the atmosphere of the space, calm down and thus ease his or her mood.

The content in VR helmets will “send” the patient to very specific elements of their traumatic memories, including images, smells, and sounds. The psychologist will select content from the catalog that fits the parameters of a particular patient’s disorder and helps them process memories, put trauma in its place, and regain control of their daily lives through full visual immersion in a 3D world in VR.

The project was developed by the Way to Health rehabilitation center together with ADVIN Ukraine
