The Security Service of Ukraine detained a 22-year-old agent of the Russian military intelligence (GRU) who was spying for Russia in ten regions of Ukraine. The offender, a resident of Kherson region, posed as a military man and under this “legend” moved around the country collecting intelligence for Russian special services.
The SBU CI established that the agent worked in Donetsk, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad and Chernivtsi regions. He traveled by buses, reconnoitering the locations of Ukrainian air defense facilities and the coordinates of hospitals and medical institutions where wounded servicemen were treated.
The agent sent the collected data to the Russian GRU via messenger. Russian handlers promised him “evacuation” to Russia and employment in the private military company Wagner for further participation in the war against Ukraine.
The SBU detained the agent red-handed in Mykolaiv while he was collecting information about the Ukrainian Armed Forces bases. During the search, they seized his cell phone, which contained intelligence reports and a list of contacts that had already been established by counterintelligence.
SBU investigators served him with a notice of suspicion of high treason under Part 1 of the Criminal Code. 2 Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The suspect is being held in custody without bail and could face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
