International security expert at the Intermarium Information Center Yuriy Goncharenko conducted a detailed analysis of the current situation around the presidential elections in Moldova. According to his assessment, candidate Alexandru Stoianoglo demonstrates a more pro-Ukrainian position and may be the best choice for strengthening Ukrainian-Moldovan relations.
“Stoyanoglo’s statements during the election debates about his support for Ukraine and readiness to develop constructive relations with Kyiv contrast significantly with the ambiguous position of the current government,” the expert notes.
According to diplomatic sources cited by Honcharenko, the current president, Maia Sandu, has significantly changed her political position. The expert points to the confirmed facts of her regular contacts with Russian special services and personally with Dmitry Kozak, Putin’s deputy chief of staff.
According to the analyst, this reversal is caused by a set of internal problems, including the difficult economic situation, the threat of mass protests, and constant pressure from the separatist regions of Transnistria and Gagauzia.
“According to available information, Sandu made a deal with Moscow, receiving campaign funding and guarantees of no mass protests,” the Center’s expert emphasizes.
An important signal, according to Honcharenko, is the pro-European position of Stoianoglo, who proposed to sign an act on the irreversibility of Moldova’s European path. “This indicates his willingness to adhere to a balanced foreign policy course,” the analyst notes.
In the first round of elections, Maia Sandu won 42.49% of the vote, which, according to the expert, indicates that there is no convincing support for her current course among the population.
“The situation requires close monitoring and possible correction of Ukraine’s policy towards Moldova. It is necessary to take into account the new balance of power when planning a regional strategy,” Yuriy Goncharenko concludes.
