A suspect in the murder of Andriy Parubiy, an MP from the European Union and former chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, was detained in Khmelnytsky region. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the detention overnight, adding: “There are the first testimonies of the suspect,” and investigators “are taking further urgent actions to establish all the circumstances.”

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko clarified that operatives were on the direct trail of the alleged shooter 24 hours after the crime, and detained him at the 36th hour. “I won’t give many details now… I will only say that the crime was carefully prepared,” the Interior Minister said.

The shooting took place in the afternoon of August 30 in the Frankivsk district of Lviv, on Yefremova Street. The politician died on the spot. According to Babel, the attacker fired about eight shots and was dressed as a delivery service courier.

In the first hours after the crime, a special operation “Siren” was launched in the city, and footage from surveillance cameras and images from the scene were circulated showing police cordons and investigative actions.

In a nighttime update at 01:03, Zelenskyy said that Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko “reported on further procedural steps” and confirmed the fact of the suspect’s first testimony.

What they say officially

  • Office of the President. “The entire team of law enforcement officers and prosecutors continue to work around the clock,” Zelensky said in his nightly address.

Comments and ratings

The head of the InfoLight.UA Research and Analytical Group, Yuriy Honcharenko , called on the investigation to publish irrefutable evidence of the detainee’s involvement on Facebook:

I have one wish for the investigation: to provide irrefutable evidence that the murderer has been detained… I would like to remind you of the Sheremet case, where a formal trial of the innocent is taking place, and the search for the real killers will probably never begin.”

He also criticized the “under round-the-clock control” formula:

“I understand that this is formal… But when will they stop writing about him? How does this “control” really help the investigation?”

The commentator also recalled Parubiy’s role in the language law:

“Andriy Parubiy should be canonized among all conscious Ukrainians for the Law on Language alone.”

Context.

Andriy Parubiy, a former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada and current MP from the “EU” party, was killed by shots from a short-barreled weapon. Doctors pronounced him dead on the spot; the investigation considers careful preparation to be a key feature of the crime. Some media outlets reported that the attacker was disguised as a courier; investigators are checking these details.

What’s next. Investigative actions are ongoing, and law enforcement officers promise to inform about the motive, accomplices and the channel of escape after the procedural processing of the data. Remember: until a court decision is made, all defendants are presumed innocent.
