On January 20, a short video was posted in the Ukrainian information space, in which Italian Prime Minister George Meloni says that “Rome should become the capital of the European Union.” The video is being circulated in connection with the inauguration of Donald Trump with relevant comments, such as “Trump announced the annexation of Greenland, and Maloni will seize power in the EU.”
However, in fact, this is another Russian propaganda piece that appeared on January 18 on some telegram channels, and after that it was picked up by powerful, including online, media.
The original is a speech by Joji Maloney at the 2019 Brothers of Italy party conference:
“…he even managed to utter the scandalous phrase “They say that Paris is the capital of Italy”. Fabio Fazzi, if Italy is so disgusting to you, perhaps you should have received your million-dollar salary from the French instead of demanding that it be paid from RAI’s license fees. The capital of Italy is Rome! Rome! Rome is the capital of Italy, and I’ll tell you more.
Rome should be the capital of the European Union, and I want to submit this demand to the European Parliament, because the capital of the European Union cannot be the most convenient place to have offices, it should be the place that best represents its millennial identity. This is one of the demands we would like to make to the next European Parliament.”
This is a translation of this fragment, which has a completely different context.
