Ukraine unblocks truck traffic on the border with Poland. This was due to the launch of contrailer transportation, which moves freight trains across the border on railroad platforms. The operation was carried out in cooperation with Ukrzaliznytsia, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the logistics units of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.

Who and how managed to unblock the Ukrainian-Polish border

The online.ua team learned the first details from its own sources in the relevant services.

At the moment, the movement of railway platforms on the route Lviv (Sknyliv) – Katowice (Slavkuv) has been organized. They crossed the state border through the Volodymyr-Hrubeshiv railway checkpoint. A special bus and an overnight stay in a hotel were organized for the road train drivers.

The first train to cross the Polish border had 23 platforms. The goods that were transported were products of Ukrainian companies that were going to their European customers.

These include furniture, fuel pellets, charcoal, lamps, fans, fittings, etc. The train will run to Katowice station, from where the Ukrainian trucks will proceed to their destinations on their own.

All the necessary customs procedures and legal requirements of both Ukraine and Poland were complied with during the clearance of the cargo. So there should be no complications from the Polish customs.

Currently, transportation is carried out by rail with the so-called “wide gauge” (1520 mm). This, of course, somewhat limits the geography of possible destinations, but it eliminates the problem of changing wheelsets at the border. The fact is that both Poland and Slovakia have railroad sections with a 1520 mm gauge.

At one time, their construction was necessitated by the need to ensure unimpeded cargo transportation between the Warsaw Pact countries.

Ukraine has finally found a “saving grace” amid the border blockade

It is worth noting that in the European Union, containerized transportation (transportation of cars by rail) is considered one of the most advanced logistics technologies.

They combine speed, efficiency, simplified logistics, ease of design, and environmental friendliness.

Currently, this type of transportation has become a real “lifeline” that can restore blocked road transportation to the European Union.

It is known that Ukrzaliznytsia is currently able to form a fleet of about a hundred platforms for container transportation.
